of 5— Set Up ChatGPT with Clinical Context

What you'll accomplish

By the end of this guide, you'll be using ChatGPT to generate customized psychoeducation handouts, therapy worksheets, client homework assignments, and group therapy curricula on demand — in minutes instead of hours of searching Google or adapting generic templates. You'll never again spend 45 minutes looking for the right handout before a session.

What you'll need

  • A ChatGPT account — free at chatgpt.com (Plus at $20/month gives better quality and fewer limits)
  • No special setup needed — you can start immediately
  • Time needed: 5 minutes to get oriented; 2–5 minutes per clinical material
  • Cost: Free / $20/month (ChatGPT Plus)

How-To Guide: Use ChatGPT to Create Unlimited Clinical Materials

Step 1: Set Up ChatGPT with Clinical Context

You can give ChatGPT context about your role so it produces more relevant output without you explaining every time.

  1. Go to chatgpt.com and sign in
  2. Click your profile icon → "Customize ChatGPT"
  3. In the "What would you like ChatGPT to know about you?" box, add:
Copy and paste this
I am a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC/LPC/LCSW). I specialize in [your specialties — e.g., "anxiety, trauma, and depression"]. I primarily use [CBT / DBT / ACT / EMDR — your modalities]. My clients are [your population — e.g., "adults and teenagers"]. I need clinical materials that are evidence-informed and written in plain language — no jargon.
  1. In the "How would you like ChatGPT to respond?" box, add:
Copy and paste this
For clinical materials: clear, warm, evidence-informed language. Use bullet points and short sentences. Avoid clinical jargon — write for someone with no psychology background unless I specify otherwise. Always include the evidence base for therapeutic techniques when I ask.
