For Mental Health Counselors ·
What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll be using ChatGPT to generate customized psychoeducation handouts, therapy worksheets, client homework assignments, and group therapy curricula on demand — in minutes instead of hours of searching Google or adapting generic templates. You'll never again spend 45 minutes looking for the right handout before a session.
What you'll need
You can give ChatGPT context about your role so it produces more relevant output without you explaining every time.
I am a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC/LPC/LCSW). I specialize in [your specialties — e.g., "anxiety, trauma, and depression"]. I primarily use [CBT / DBT / ACT / EMDR — your modalities]. My clients are [your population — e.g., "adults and teenagers"]. I need clinical materials that are evidence-informed and written in plain language — no jargon.
For clinical materials: clear, warm, evidence-informed language. Use bullet points and short sentences. Avoid clinical jargon — write for someone with no psychology background unless I specify otherwise. Always include the evidence base for therapeutic techniques when I ask.
What you should see: These settings apply to every future ChatGPT conversation automatically.
The most immediately useful skill: generating a custom handout for any topic your client brings up.
Create a 1-page psychoeducation handout on [topic] for a [describe client — e.g., "adult with generalized anxiety disorder" or "teenager with ADHD"]. Include:
- What it is (1-2 sentences)
- How it shows up in daily life (3-4 bullet points)
- Why it happens (brief, accessible explanation)
- 3 coping strategies supported by evidence
Format: warm tone, plain language, no jargon, bullet points, readable in under 3 minutes.
Topic examples that work well:
What you should see: A structured 1-page handout ready to print or email to the client.
Generic worksheets work. Customized worksheets work better — and AI makes customization free.
For CBT thought records:
Create a CBT thought record worksheet. Include columns for: Situation, Automatic Thought, Emotion (and intensity 0-100), Evidence FOR the thought, Evidence AGAINST the thought, Balanced Alternative Thought, Outcome Emotion (0-100). Add brief instructions at the top explaining each column in 1 sentence. Keep the language simple.
For DBT skills practice:
Create a 1-page practice worksheet for the DBT skill [TIPP / PLEASE / Opposite Action / Wise Mind / Cope Ahead — choose one]. Include: a brief description of the skill (2-3 sentences), step-by-step instructions for using it, a space to plan when to use it this week, and a reflection section for after use. Plain language, no DBT jargon in the instructions.
For ACT exercises:
Create a worksheet for the ACT exercise [defusion / values clarification / committed action / observing self — choose one]. Include: a brief explanation of what this skill is for, the step-by-step exercise, a reflection prompt, and a reminder of what the client is moving toward. Warm, encouraging tone.
What you should see: A complete worksheet with clear structure and instructions, ready to print.
Homework extends therapy into clients' daily lives — but creating good homework takes clinical creativity. AI is surprisingly effective at this.
Create a between-session homework assignment for a client working on [presenting problem]. They have learned [skill or concept] in our last session. The homework should: practice this skill in a specific daily situation, take no more than 10 minutes per day, and include a brief reflection prompt. Make it concrete and achievable for someone who is [motivated / resistant / new to therapy — choose one]. Include a weekly tracking sheet.
What you should see: A structured homework assignment with daily practice instructions and a simple tracking form.
Group therapy requires more planning infrastructure than individual therapy. AI can draft the whole curriculum.
For a curriculum:
Create a [8/10/12]-session group therapy curriculum for [population] using [CBT / DBT / process-oriented / psychoeducational] approach. For each session: topic, opening activity (5-10 min), main skill or discussion (25-30 min), 2 discussion questions, and a take-home practice suggestion. Include a curriculum overview at the top.
For session-specific materials:
Create detailed session materials for Session [X] of a [type of group] for [population]. Topic: [session topic]. Include: facilitator introduction script (2-3 minutes), main exercise or skill with instructions, group discussion questions (3-4), and a handout for participants to take home.
What you should see: Complete session materials including facilitator notes and participant handouts.
Psychoeducation handout:
Create a 1-page psychoeducation handout on [topic] for a [client description]. Include: what it is, how it shows up, why it happens, 3 coping strategies. Plain language, bullet points.
CBT worksheet:
Create a CBT [thought record / behavior experiment / activity scheduling] worksheet. Include instructions and [client population]-appropriate prompts. Simple language.
DBT skills worksheet:
Create a 1-page practice worksheet for DBT skill [skill name]. Include: description, step-by-step instructions, practice plan, reflection. No jargon.
Homework assignment:
Create a between-session homework for a client working on [problem] who has learned [skill]. Should take under 10 minutes/day. Include tracking sheet.
Group session materials:
Create facilitator materials for Session [X] of a [group type] for [population]. Topic: [topic]. Include intro script, main activity, discussion questions, participant handout.
